Ventas continues to advance its plan to meet its environmental, social and governance objectives by 2040, the Chicago-based real estate investment trust said in its annual sustainability report, released Monday.

“With the country facing a historic demographic shift, our work to enable exceptional environments that benefit a large and growing aging population has never been more important,” Ventas Chairman and CEO Debra A. Cafaro stated in a press release issued in conjunction with the sustainability report.

In 2022, Ventas became the first healthcare REIT to commit to net zero operational carbon emissions, with an eye toward accomplishing that goal by 2040.

The REIT had set a goal that all people managers would complete training to recognize unconscious biases at least once every three calendar years and that new people managers would complete the training within a year of becoming a people manager. As of Aug. 31, 87% of people managers with more than one year of service on the job had completed unconscious bias training since 2021, according to the report.

Ventas said that it remains a leader in energy management. In 2024, the REIT earned the Energy Star Partner of the Year Sustained Excellence in Energy Management award for the second year in a row. In addition, Ventas was named the Partner of the Year for the fourth consecutive year. More than 175 Ventas-owned buildings received Energy Star certification in 2023, the most certified properties of any healthcare REIT, according to the report.

The REIT’s other recognition for its ESG efforts include:

  • Being listed as No. 11 among healthcare REITs in the GRESB global ESG real estate assessment since 2017.
  • Maintaining ISS ESG Prime Status for Corporate ESG performance since 2020.
  • Appearing on the 100 Top Corporate Citizens list by 3BL for the fourth consecutive year.
  • Being named among the America’s Most Responsible Companies list by Newsweek for the fourth consecutive year.
  • Being named a Top-Rated ESG Regional Company by Morningstar Sustainalytics for the second consecutive year.
