Sunrise Senior Living achieved its second consecutive year of the WELL Health-Safety Rating across 200-plus communities for its commitment to creating healthy living environments.

The WELL rating, awarded by the International WELL Building Institute, or IWBI, is a third-party verified rating that supports organizations focused on well-being through building operations. It involves addressing air and water quality, clearing procedures, emergency preparedness, health resources and stakeholder engagement.

“At Sunrise Senior Living, we recognize that the well-being of our residents and team members is intrinsically linked to the health of the environments in which they live and work,” Sunrise CEO Jack R. Callison said in a statement. “By prioritizing sustainable building practices, green operations and holistic wellness programs, we are not only enhancing the quality of life for our residents but also setting new standards in the senior living industry.”

Sunrise operates more than 240 communities in the United States and Canada providing independent living, assisted living and memory care services, as well as nursing and rehabilitative services.

Last year, Sunrise was the largest senior living provider to adopt the WELL Health-Safety Rating for Facility Operations and Management across its entire portfolio. More than 600 senior living communities around the world have committed to or have achieved the WELL Health-Safety Rating or WELL Certification from IWBI.

In addition to its second consecutive WELL Health-Safety Rating, The Apsley by Sunrise in Manhattan achieved WELL Certification Platinum, making it the only assisted living community in the nation to achieve that level of recognition. In 2021, Sunrise East 56th in Manhattan was the first and only senior living building to receive LEED Silver, WELL Certification at the Silver level and WELL Health-Safety Rating designation.

Sunrise also earned the 2023 Health and Safety Leadership Award from IWBI. Among the organization’s other ongoing environmental wellness initiatives are sustainable building practices through energy-efficient designs and materials in new construction and renovations, green operations integrating eco-friendly practices like waste reduction and recycling programs, and wellness programs to address resident physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.
Forty Sunrise communities also received Energy Star certifications for 2024. Sunrise of Windsor earned the 2024 Energy Star Canada Award for the Building of the Year — Senior Living Community and Residential Care Facility.
