Artificial intelligence is helping improve workforce efficiencies in senior living, and one new platform could help save administrators time and money in staff scheduling.

In what it calls an industry-first, CareRev announced the launch of Smart Rates, an AI-based shift pricing platform that recommends shift rates that can save assigning time while being mindful of budgets. A few minutes after a position is uploaded on the platform, Smart Rates gives rate recommendations for upcoming available shifts.

The technology can lower labor costs by an average of 18% while optimizing staffing levels, according to the company. By using the technology, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital filled shifts 47% faster due to decreased time spent on manually adjusting rates, a company release said.

“In the wake of the pandemic, pricing shifts became a great challenge. … With the technology, we are able to competitively price shifts while controlling costs,” said Elaine Zemel, nursing administration business analyst at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, in a statement.

Elsewhere in the marketplace, Carlton Senior Living has partnered with software company Speak2 to implement Alexa-enabled devices to improve staffing efficiencies. Speak2 helped Carlton set up Alexa voice-enabled technology so that residents and staff can have conversations in real time without opening an app or sitting at a computer, freeing up time for staff. The program saved Carlton 25 hours of staff time related to data entry each month and lowered resident emergency pendant requests by 34% per day, officials said.

In senior living and across healthcare, AI-based tools like ChatGPT are replacing language-based tasks such as filling out patient forms. A recent study estimated that 40% of healthcare working hours could be augmented by using AI, and 42% of companies want to make a large investment in ChatGPT in 2023.
