At least two residents of a continuing care retirement / life plan community in Florida recently were able to receive emergency assistance within minutes after falling and being unable to get back up, thanks to the integration of Alexa and other tech solutions throughout the campus.

The safe intervention for those residents are among the most recent dividends from Cypress Cove’s adoption of the K4Connect senior living technology ecosystem, the community announced.

Cypress Cove’s 60-acre site in Fort Myers, FL, includes independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, rehabilitative care and home health. The operator first adopted the K4Connect system last year.

It is one of a growing number of senior living providers using the use of Alexa-enabled safety systems, which allow caregivers to respond to an issue such as falling faster than ever before.

In addition to the Alexa features, the smart security system includes automated check-ins that help focus on residents who are potential concerns, rather than making everyone check in and provide status updates or having nurses constantly monitor each resident.

The program has helped improve “residents’ daily living experience, while also improving staff efficiency and reducing overhead costs,” Cypress Cove vice president of innovation Joe Velderman said in a statement. “We look forward to continuing to provide innovative, technology-driven solutions to our residents.”

Cypress Cove’s system now also includes a centralized software hub, through which caregivers and other staff members can manage schedules or transportation requests; lighting and temperature controls for both assisted and independent living residents; and automated, streamlined workflows.

Cypress Cove won a Bronze Award last week as part of the McKnight’s Excellence in Technology Awards for its entry, entitled “Successful Employee Disaster Fund Campaign Aided by Technology.”
