In a new survey of people who recently have retired or will soon, 60% said that they view retirement as a time to reinvent themselves.

The poll of 2,000 Americans who have retired, or will retire, between 2020 and 2029, was commissioned by IHG Hotels & Resorts and conducted online by Talker Research between July 31 and Aug. 6.

Respondents indicated that their reinvention may come in the form of traveling more (59%), taking up a new hobby (43%), taking a “trip of a lifetime” (40%) or learning a new skill (33%).

The most-cited hobbies among respondents were gardening (43%), reading (42%) and cooking (38%) and baking (28%).

Some participants also said that they plan to start part-time jobs or businesses to have extra income (78%) or to try to ensure that they don’t become bored (45%).

Overall, 26% of respondents said that their younger selves would love to live their current lives.
