Residents, families and staff at The Woods at Canco, a Holiday Retirement community in Portland, ME, recently donated cans and bottles to support the local Q97.9 Morning Show in its three-day Cans for a Cure fundraiser for breast cancer awareness.

The campaign surpassed its $100,000 goal by $15,000, thanks in part to the community’s efforts. The Woods at Canco family collected more than 12 bags of returnables in less than three weeks.

“Station representatives said it was one of the largest hauls they had picked up and that our residents were the most helpful group that they had seen,” Molly Donlan, regional coach of resident experience, told McKnight’s Senior Living. “Everyone helped load the bags onto the truck for them.”

One resident even went through recycling bins and trash bins to make sure no can was missed, she said, and “even hauled some of his own cans and bottles on to the truck to donate.”

“It was such a fun way to get the residents excited and involved with the greater Portland, ME. community,” Donlan said.
