New Orleans tops a list of the most LGBT-friendly cities for retirement released Tuesday by SeniorAdvice.

The presence of LGBT-friendly senior living communities was one factor that went into the rankings, according to the senior housing referral service. Other factors included the quality of healthcare, the number of hospitals and pharmacies, the percentage of LGBTQ population in the area, available social activities, festivals, weather, the presence of an LGBTQ Chamber of Commerce, local and state legislation protecting the LGBTQ community, the cost of living, the city’s score according to the Human Rights Campaign Municipal Equality Index, and the city’s SeniorScore.

The SeniorScore, created by SeniorAdvice, is calculated by compiling and factoring more than 100 variables, including access to healthcare and the number of senior residents, to help determine how well a specific location accommodates the comfort and needs of older adults.
