Help is on the way to healthcare workers grappling with the technical complexities of digital medicine.

The University of Illinois is launching an Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Medicine Certificate program to assist healthcare professionals in obtaining a better understanding of AI and applications through real-world care studies using machine learning models. The self-paced online program costs $750, and students can receive Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits upon completion of the program.

AI has made a significant impact on the healthcare system, especially during the pandemic. Current applications include disease diagnostics, remote health monitoring, enhanced electronic healthcare records and clinical decision support.

Most AI training courses on the market are geared towards students with coding skills who have plans to develop AI tools. This course is designed to familiarize clinicians with key concepts in applications of AI in medicine. It is specifically targeted at physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, medical students, veterinarians, and veterinary technicians.

By the end of the course, students will be able to read literature related to artificial intelligence in medicine, understand how data-driven decisions are made and assessed, identify different types of AI tools and actively participate in the purchase of AI-based medical software.

The program is a collaboration between the University of Illinois College of Engineering, the Carle Illinois College of Medicine and the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine.
