Christine Slater, McKnight's Women of Distinction Spirit Award
Christine Slater

Editor’s Note: McKnight’s Senior Living, McKnight’s Long-Term Care News and McKnight’s Home Care are profiling the McKnight’s 2024 Women of Distinction honorees daily from July 1 to Aug. 13. For additional McKnight’s Women of Distinction content, visit this page.

Since 2013, Christine Slater has worked in a variety of roles at HomeWell Care Services, ranging from care supervisor to care manager, but she found that something was missing in her management roles. Although she was an effective leader in those positions, she had a strong desire to return to her fulfilling work as a caregiver.

From comforting a client displaced by Hurricane Ian to working multiple shifts in a 16-hour day, her commitment to quality care does not stop when she’s off the clock. She is adept at not only providing effective care but at connecting with the clients she serves, according to colleagues, who said that even the most hesitant clients end up warming up to Slater as she puts in the time and effort to get to know them and what they value. They said she even thoroughly cleaned the kitchen of a 100-year-old client, including the refrigerator, which hadn’t been cleaned in years.

“Christine is caring, patient and compassionate — even in the most challenging situations with clients,” her nominator said. “She embodies the qualities that we would all seek in a caregiver for our own loved ones or even for ourselves. She delivers on every aspect of quality care with trusted and reliable expertise, prioritizing peace of mind for all entrusted to our care.”

More about Slater:

  • This past winter, Slater spent more than two hours shoveling snow from her driveway just to be prepared for possibly getting called during a snowstorm with 0-degree air temperature.
  • She received HomeWell’s Heart of HomeWell award for 2023, the brand’s most esteemed recognition, awarded to one caregiver annually for being the most accurate representation of the company’s values.
  • She formed a strong connection with a former client, taking him to her agency’s office potlucks, on field trips to the zoo and to his favorite restaurants. They even dressed up together for Halloween.
