Median household income rose to $80,610 in 2023, according to a report published Wednesday by the US Census Bureau. The 4% increase from 2022 marked the first annual increase since 2019.

Median incomes increased by 5.4% to $84,630 for white households and by 5.7% to $89,050 for non-Hispanic white households between 2022 and 2023.

Hispanic and Black households didn’t see that income boost; their median incomes of $65,540 and $56,490, respectively, showed an increase of 0.4% and 2.8%. The changes were not notably different from the previous year “and remained the lowest among all race and ethnic groups,” according to the Census Bureau.

The median income among Asians was relatively unchanged year over year, with a 0.2% decrease. Still, Asian households had the highest median income among all race and Hispanic origin groups, at $112,800.

Median income for men who worked full-time year-round increased by 3% year over year; for women, 1.5%.

The number of total workers in the United States increased by 2.2 million, or a “statistically insignificant” 1.3%, between 2022 and 2023, according to the Census Bureau.
