One of the two Americans arrested in relation to the Wednesday assassination of Haiti President Jovenel Moise worked for a major U.S. senior living company until earlier this year, and another major U.S. senior living company is listed on a publicly posted job history bearing his name.

James Solages, whom authorities said was a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Haiti, along with another man identified as an American citizen, Joseph Vincent, told a judge that they were not in the room when Moise was killed and that they were acting as translators for others, having answered an online ad for the role, according to a Friday New York Times article. A plan to take the president to the palace — not to kill him — had been in the works for a month, the judge said the men told him. The Times said that Solages at one time had worked as a security guard at the Canadian Embassy in Haiti.

A profile on LinkedIn under Solages’ name has a work history that includes time as plant operations director for Senior Lifestyle in Lantana, FL, the location of The Carlisle Palm Beach senior living community, which offers independent living, assisted living and memory care. The profile indicates that Solages began working at the community in July 2019 and lists him as still working there, but Senior Lifestyle told McKnight’s Senior Living that he no longer is an employee.

“Mr. Solages ended his employment with the community earlier this year. The community leadership team followed the community’s hiring policies with respect to Mr. Solages, and at this time, we have no further information,” Senior Lifestyle said in a statement to McKnight’s Senior Living.

The company said it is “committed to assisting all law enforcement agencies with their investigations” and that “[t]he safety and wellbeing of our residents and team members are our highest priority.”

The online profile also lists Solages as having been a regional maintenance tech for Brookdale Senior Living from July 2016 to July 2019, and a separate LinkedIn profile lists Brookdale as Solages’ current employer. A Brookdale spokesperson could not immediately confirm to McKnight’s Senior Living whether he previously had worked for the company but said that nobody with that name is a current employee.

One of the online profiles also indicates that Solages was an operations maintenance specialist at a Tamarac, FL, nursing home from November 2013 to November 2016. The facility operates under a different name now.

Senior Lifestyle is the seventh largest U.S. senior living company in terms of operational resident capacity and eight largest by total units, according to a recent report issued by Argentum. The company was listed as the eighth largest operator and 10th largest senior living owner in the United States on the most recent ASHA 50 lists compiled by the American Seniors Housing Association.

Brookdale was listed as the largest senior living operator on Argentum’s and ASHA’s most recent lists and the third largest senior living owner on ASHA’s list.
