A recently completed $112 million renovation and expansion project at Oak Trace, a not-for-profit continuing care retirement / life plan community set on more than 40 acres in Downers Grove, IL, is “among the largest projects in the Downers Grove area and an unprecedented jewel in the community,” according to Oak Trace Executive Director Dan Harrington.

“The architecture, design, stunning artwork, and amenities are truly incomparable,” he said. The community is owned by Dallas and West Des Moines, IA-based Lifespace Communities.

The project, announced two years ago, began with a $72 million construction effort that completely rebuilt the CCRC in 2019. That phase added a health and wellness center, offering assisted living, memory care, rehabilitation and skilled nursing.

The recently completed second phase of the project enhanced shared spaces in the existing independent living building, including the formal, restaurant-style dining room with floor-to-ceiling glassed-in wine racks; a casual gathering space offering cocktails and small-plate items; a newly furnished library; the outfitted art studio, a lobby and more.

The community now includes a new building with 140 independent living apartments, a fitness and aquatic center, a performing arts center, multiple restaurant-style dining venues, a salon and spa and a coffee shop. Future landscaping plans include sprucing up entryways, tree-lined boulevards, orchards, firepits, courtyards and gardens.

“We are so excited about this entire project and looking towards the beautiful future with our elegant, vibrant senior living community,” Harrington said.
