Gloved healthcare worker holding someone's hand

Patients with COVID-19 who were discharged from hospitals to home care experienced overall positive recovery results, according to a recent study evaluating medical records for approximately 1,400 people.

Home healthcare was provided by the Visiting Nurse Service of New York. On admission to home healthcare, 84% of the patients had trouble breathing with any exertion, 50% reported anxiety, 47% reported confusion and 42% reported daily or constant pain. The need for assistance with activities of daily living was “very common,” according to researchers.

By the time the patients were discharged from home healthcare, however, most were showing “significant” improvements in all areas, and only 10% subsequently were readmitted to the hospital again. Ninety-four percent of patients were discharged from home healthcare after an average of 32 days.

Results were published in Annals of Internal Medicine.
