What’s the best way to combat Alzheimer’s disease going forward? Combination therapy likely will yield the most impressive results, according to researchers from the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation in New York.
Although most clinical trials continue to focus on drugs that address brain changes, the group claims a few trials in earlier phases have been looking into other strategies, particularly ones that target aging processes that may exacerbate the disease’s progress.
“Targeting the common biological processes of aging may be an effective approach to developing therapies to prevent or delay age-related diseases,” wrote Howard Fillit, M.D., the review’s senior author, in a journal article.
“Our success in fighting Alzheimer’s disease will likely come from combination therapy — finding drugs that have positive effects on the malfunctions that happen as people age,” Fillit added.
