“Hiring was broad-based in April,” ADP Chief Economist Nela Richardson said in a press release issued Wednesday in conjunction with an ADP National Employment Report Economy Lab report

“Only the information sector – telecommunications, media and information technology — showed weakness, posting job losses and the smallest pace of pay gains since August 2021,” Richardson added.

The report, which analyzes the payroll transactions of more than 25 million US workers, is produced by the ADP Research Institute in collaboration with the Stanford Digital Economy Lab.

The health/education sector added 26,000 jobs in March out of 192,000 total jobs added in the private sector during the month. That’s compared with the 11,000 jobs added to the sector in February out of the total 140,000 jobs added in the private sector during that month.

The data showed a service sector gain of 145,000 jobs in March. The biggest gains in the service sector last month were seen in leisure / hospitality, which saw the addition of 56,000 jobs.

Regionally, the biggest gains in March occurred in the South, with 124,000 jobs added. Private employers in the Northeast added 36,000 jobs, followed by the Midwest with 33,000 jobs added and the West with 11,000 jobs added.

Large firms (with 500 or more employees) gained the most jobs in March. Medium-sized firms (with 50 to 499 employees) gained 46,000 jobs, and small companies (with one to 49 employees) added 40,000 jobs.

Pay gains

“Year-over-year pay gains for job-stayers were little changed in April at 5%,” according to the report.

Pay growth for job-changers fell from 10.1% in March to 9.3$, “but remains higher than it was at the beginning of the year,” ADP said.

Companies with 500 or more employees saw the smallest median change in annual pay, 4.9%. The change was 5% for firms with one to 19 employees and firms with 250-499 employees, and 5.2% each at companies with one to 19 employees and companies250 to 499 employees.
