Assisted living / personal care managers working in continuing care retirement communities have an average salary of $80,102 in 2022, a 3.52% increase over 2021, according to the 2022-2023 Continuing Care Retirement Community Salary & Benefits Report, released Wednesday. The report is published by Hospital & Healthcare Compensation Service in cooperation with LeadingAge. 

The aforementioned amount and percentage are derived from data from facilities that participated in the survey both this year and last year.

Salary findings are reported according to revenue size, total unit size, region, state and core-based statistical area.

By CCRC size:

  • At communities with up to 299 units, the average salary for an assisted living manager was highest in the South Atlantic region (Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia Washington, DC, and West Virginia) and lowest in the West North Central region (Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota), with data sufficient for seven of nine regions.
  • At communities with 300 or more units, the average salary for an assisted living manager was highest in the Pacific region (Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon and Washngton) and lowest in the West South Central region (Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas), with data available for six of nine regions.

By revenue size:

  • At communities with annual revenues of less than $20 million, the average salary for an assisted living manager was highest in the Pacific region and lowest in the West North Central region, with data sufficient for seven of nine regions.
  • At communities with annual revenues of $20 million or more, the average salary for an assisted living manager was in the Pacific region, and the lowest was in the West South Central region, with data reported for six of nine regions.

By for-profit status:

  • At for-profit CCRCs, the average salary for an assisted living manager was $67,550. At not-for-profits, it was $81,669.

By state:

  • Of 13 states for which data were sufficient, the average salary was the highest in Maryland and the lowest in Ohio.

The survey also found that assisted living managers’ average bonuses were $4,321 in 2022, based on the 23.75% of respondents that reported bonus information.

Of all respondents, 99.57% offered nursing care via registered nurses and licensed practical nurses, 81.20% offered memory care, 60.26% offered independent living and 58.97% offered assisted living.

This year marks the 25th year of publication of the CCRC Salary & Benefits Report report, which uses data with an effective date of March. A total of 421 CCRCs participated and provided compensation data on more than 65,400 employees covering 46 management and 54 nonmanagement positions. Of all study participants, 86.16% were not-for-profit facilities, with 44.04% of respondents religiously affiliated.
