Cleveland, San Francisco and six other cities were named in an article from US News Tuesday as ideal retirement destinations for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender older adults.

The list was published Tuesday during Pride Month.

Charleston, SC, Asheville, NC,  Portland, OR, Ausin, TX, Cleveland and Toronto — in addition to Denver and San Francisco — were cited by US News as cities with LGBTQ-inclusive environments.

LGBTQ older adults can confront additional challenges that others don’t when facing retirement. As a result, some seniors turn to communities specifically tailored to LGBTQ individuals, and some of those communities either are or are near the eight cities listed in the article.

Austin, TX-based senior housing referral service SeniorAdvice listed the top 15 most LGBT-inclusive senior housing communities in the country in 2017. Locations in California and Florida comprised one-third of the communities on the list. Communities in North Carolina and Oregon also were identified, and Cleveland’s A Place for Us 55+ active adult community specifically was named.

A Place for Us also was singled out by US News this year for making Cleveland a desirable destination for LGBTQ older adults, as well as the city’s Rainbow Pioneers, an organization founded to support the needs of queer individuals aged more than 50 years.

San Francisco, despite its high cost of living, is an ideal location for LGBTQ older adults, Warren Morelli, owner of travel blog The Nomad Hive, told US News.

“I found San Francisco to be an incredible place,” he said. “The city’s rich LGBTQ history, inclusive policies and specialized healthcare made me feel right at home. While the cost of living is higher, there are resources to support low-income seniors.”

San Francisco also is home to Openhouse, a community founded in 1998 for LGBTQ older adults.
