Senior living and care providers under the PointClickCare umbrella soon will have more efficient access to medication for their residents, as well as the right data to make sure those drugs don’t incur dangerous side effects.

The software company continued its busy slate of updates and acquisitions with two big announcements on Tuesday: the creation of a new digital platform, Pharmacy Connect, designed to expedite prescriptions, and a new partnership with SinguLab, which it said will help create better risk assessments for possible drug interactions and diagnostics.

The two additions were announced separately but tell the same story of the push in long-term care to streamline the med management process and avoid costly outcomes, such as rehospitalization, from medication errors.

Using SinguLab’s diagnostic tools, PointClickCare was able to identify and address the needs of 77% of people who were found to be at risk for moderate to severe drug-gene reactions, the latter company said.

Medication management can at times be challenging in senior care, due to the complex interactions of multiple prescriptions and high dosages. At worst, poor EHR interoperability can lead to outcomes such as refilling prescriptions for patients who are already dead, as happened in California from 2020-2022.

“Med management challenges in senior living are exacerbated by the daily struggle to provide consistent, quality care while battling an alarming increase in staffing shortages,” Travis Palmquist, senior vice president and general manager of emerging markets for PointClickCare, said in a statement. “Our team is focused on finding new ways to help our senior living customers work more efficiently and safely, ultimately driving exceptional resident experience and optimal health outcomes.”

PointClickCare has been very busy over the past few months, updating its system and expanding its footprint. Before partnering with SinguLab, PointClickCare announced that it had acquired the American HealthTech platform last month.

Last week, PointClickCare was one of the major winners, along with MatrixCare, in the Best in KLAS 2024 slate of awards, winning the title of best software solution for long-term care providers for the fifth year in a row.
