Citing staffing and other issues, Clairemont Healthcare & Wellness Center LLC, doing business as Abby Gardens Healthcare Center, plans to close by the end of the year. The San Diego skilled nursing facility has an overall rating of five stars from the Centers of Medicare & Medicaid Services.
“With the ongoing disruption in the labor markets and the current and projected inflationary wage pressures, we believe this is the right decision for our facility,” provider spokesman Jose Lynch said Wednesday in a press release. He described the Abby Gardens caregivers and other employees as “examples of excellence in healthcare services” who have “done this work from the heart and successfully cared for so many patients.”
The 99-bed SNF has earned five stars for quality measures, four stars for health inspections and three stars for staffing, according to the federal government’s Care Compare website.
Abby Gardens said it plans to discharge residents to nearby locations beginning this month, with the relocation and closure process being completed by the end of the year.
Another reason for the voluntary closure, the provider said, is that a purchase and sale agreement has been signed with Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego. The hospital plans to relocate its current pediatric SNF services to the Abby Gardens property as part of a multi-year plan to improve the hospital campus.
“We have been fortunate to work with Rady Children’s Hospital on a plan to transition this skilled nursing facility, after its current closure, to a care facility that has plans to care for the pediatric children in need of this level of care,” Lynch said.
