Humana’s fast-growing CenterWell brand announced last week it will be opening six new senior-focused primary care centers in the Atlanta area through the end of next year. This is in addition to the 35 new senior centers CenterWell will have in place by the end of this year.
The company said the new Atlanta facilities will fill a void in a market that has been experiencing an explosion in its senior population. Humana spokesman Cary Willis told McKnight’s Home Care Daily the company is looking at ways to leverage CenterWell against its recent acquisition of Kindred at Home.
“Humana is committed to creating a holistic care experience, including appropriate coordination among care delivery venues, including both primary care and home care,” Willis said. “As we enter the Atlanta market with our CenterWell clinics, we look forward to developing that appropriate level of coordination with Kindred at Home and other community-based care partners in the market.”
The new centers will be staffed with physicians, nurses and behavioral health specialists. Patients will also have access to pharmacists and social workers who have been specially trained to treat older adults.
CenterWell is a payer-agnostic healthcare services division that Humana launched in March. It operates nearly 70 primary care centers in eight states and operates under a direct care model in which reimbursement is tied to the quality of care CenterWell provides. That model of care was developed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Innovation Center to encourage providers to transition from fee-for-service to a value-based care model.
