Brookdale Senior Living announced Tuesday that average weighted occupancy for August increased 30 basis points sequentially to 78.9%. That’s a new high since the post-pandemic recovery began in March 2021.

Month-end occupancy was 80.4%.

Brookdale reported that it saw average occupancy grow by 130 basis points last month compared with August 2023 and 140 basis points in the third quarter to date when compared with the comparable periods of 2023, according to an occupancy report released Tuesday by the Brentwood, TN-based operator.

Brookdale is the country’s largest senior living operator and third-largest owner, according to the 2023 ASHA 50 list from the American Seniors Housing Association. The company topped Argentum’s list of largest senior living companies for 2023. As of June 30, Brookdale operated 649 communities in 41 states; it owns some of those communities and leases others from the owners.

During a second-quarter earnings call last month, President and CEO Lucinda “Cindy” Baier said that Brookdale has demonstrated “powerful positive progress” toward full recovery from the pandemic.
